I know it seems like an obvious statement. But let me continue.
Last week I was sitting in accounting class, enthralled as ever, and the professor started to show us a QuickBooks demo. I’ve done some accounting in the past for my dad’s firm, and he has used Peachtree for many years. That is the software I learned for my own accounting work, and it is definitely the software I prefer.
I then posted the following Twitter update:
(Hey professors who are reading this: I would never really update Twitter in class. I promise.)

A few hours later I got retweeted by Peachtree, which I thought was the coolest thing ever. Although John Tesh is still the coolest person to retweet me. Sorry, Peachtree.

I emailed my Dad and told him that Peachtree had basically called me their favorite person, which was only a slight exaggeration.
And that was it. Or so I thought.

Yesterday I received a package in the mail. I’ve bought a lot of DVDs lately and was expecting to receive one, but Barb the mail lady came to the window with a gigantic box, which for a college student is always very exciting.
I ran back to my dorm room and ripped it open, and discovered a note inside. With Peachtree written on the front
It reads as follows:
Andrew,
Thanks so much for your Peachtree tweet last week. Here are some goodies for the next time you pull an all-nighter.
We’re also sending a copy of the latest product with our compliments. We hope you can convince your prof to join the ‘cool’ Peachtree group. If you can, grab a picture of the two of you & the Peachtree box and send it to us.
Regards,
Sheri Willman
Inside was a mug filled with chocolate, Starbucks via, highlighters, a Starbucks gift card, a stress ball, and one of those hideously annoying clapper things that my roommate & neighbors will surely grow to love in the weeks to come. And the mug is fantastic – how did they know I needed a new tea mug? My old tea mug is now my oatmeal mug, and I was about to buy another one. (No, mugs cannot be multipurpose.)
And they included Peachtree Complete Accounting 2010. This is a professional, expensive piece of software. And they gave it to me for free.
Thank you so much, Sage. Every company tries to be hip to the funk, but you took it to the next level. I’m in the demographic you want to be hearing that from. I’ll definitely be spreading the word.
Oh, and the professor says she highly prefers Peachtree, but QuickBooks is simpler to explain to non-finance people. So it’s a win/lose. I’ll see if I can make any progress. And my marketing professor is excited to use this story as a lecture example (another dream realized)!
And I’m trying not to be worried about how you found my address.

I suppose this means I shouldn’t give up on twitter…
It’s just that I’m no Andrew Yellis.
